The business originated in Memphis, in 1960, with a single store owned by Catherine Weaver, whose goal was to bring style to

the plus-size market. As the concept became successful, more stores opened throughout the South. In 1960, a group of investors

bought the chain, then called Catherines Stout Shoppes, and formed Catherines Inc.

Growth continued, and by 1980 the company had opened its hundredth store. Catherines Inc. went public in 1991, becoming Catherines

Stores Corporation. In January 2000, Charming Shoppes, Inc. acquired Catherines Stores Corporation.Catherines Stores

Corporation prides itself on being a company for women and managed by women. It has always strived to provide outstanding

customer service in a comfortable store environment. Sales associates are specially trained to anticipate the needs of the
